japee-ai naam ann kai saad. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, only when he tastes this grain. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
This food comes straight from the Source of everything.
A fed body sings the Name freely — there's no shame in needing to eat; it's part of how we were made.
A nourished body sings the Name more freely — caring for it is part of the path, not against it.
The rahau: aad purakh tay ho-ay anaad — the grain itself comes from the Primal One; japee-ai naam ann kai saad — we sing the Name when nourished by this food. Kabir gently overturns the idea that holiness means despising the body. A cared-for body makes a freer heart. Meeting your basic needs isn't the enemy of the spirit; it's its partner.
A Question to Sit With
Why might taking good care of your body actually help you take good care of your heart and mind?
