You can leave offerings at the most sacred spot, live your whole life beside the holiest river, and know every line of the oldest scriptures by heart.
These are real and good things — and still they are not the whole of it.
Knowing every holy word by heart is not the same as loving the One the words point to.
Gaya (offerings for ancestors), Benares or Kashi (the sacred city on the Ganges), and reciting the four Vedas from memory — three more pillars of religious life. Namdev keeps stacking up the most honored practices. Notice that he never mocks them; he simply keeps asking whether the outward act, by itself, carries a person home.
A Question to Sit With
What is the difference between memorizing something and truly meaning it?
