Without her calf, the cow is lonely. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I feel restless and unsettled, the way a cow lows and paces when her calf is not beside her.

Restlessness can be love calling out for what it is missing.
The deeper layer

Taalaabelee is that specific ache of restlessness. The cow-and-calf image is one of the tenderest in Gurbani — pure, uncomplicated longing, love that literally calls out for its missing other. Namdev sets the whole shabad in this key: the soul's homesickness for the One.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when you miss someone you love very much?
