Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 46
Verse 2 of 6

I'll Take the One, and Rest

ਹਉ ਤਉ ਏਕੁ ਰਮਈਆ ਲੈਹਉ ॥
ha-o ta-o ayk rama-ee-aa laiha-o.
I take only the Name of the One Lord.
ਆਨ ਦੇਵ ਬਦਲਾਵਨਿ ਦੈਹਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aan dayv badlaavan daiha-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I have given away all other gods in exchange for Him. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

For me, I will hold to the One alone.

I gladly set down all the scattered running, and take that one steady refuge instead.

Resting your whole trust in the One is a relief, not a loss.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the calm center of the song.

Ha-o ta-o ayk rama-ee-aa laiha-o — as for me, I take the One. Namdev has stopped running in many directions. He trades all the other helpers for the One. That is not scorn for other paths. It is the relief of a heart that has found a place to rest.

Think of carrying ten heavy bags at once, then setting them all down for one light backpack. It feels like breathing out. Notice the words ha-o ta-o, "as for me." Namdev is speaking of his own choice. He is not laying down a rule for anyone else.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to stop scattering your worry and rest it in one place?
