You have found no place of rest for yourself; so why do you try to teach others? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, settle yourself and stop the endless restless wandering.

Before I rush to fix everyone else, let me first find my own steady place to stand.

Steady yourself first; that is where real help for others begins.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the song.

Man samajh chhod aavaa-ilay — mind, understand yourself and stop your aimless wandering. Man means mind. Then comes a gentle challenge: kaa-ay par kai jaa-ilay — why go off to teach others? You haven't found your own place to rest yet.

This is not a scolding. It is an invitation to be honest with yourself. Think of a swimming lesson. You learn to float yourself before you try to help someone else in deep water. Find your own footing first. Working on yourself comes before giving advice.

A Question to Sit With

Is it ever easier to fix others than to face what is unsettled in you?
