Commentary

Raag Jaitsree, Shabad 2, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan), Du-Padas

"Some say that He is beyond the world... while others say that He is totally within it... tell me the truth!"

The Arc

The soul begs for true news of the Beloved (rahau); the transcendent-vs-immanent debate held open, the One beyond seeing (v.1); the resolution — both pervading and in-each-heart; the true news found on the tongues of the Saints (v.2).

Key Vocabulary

  • Du-Padas — two-stanza shabad form.
  • paar / maahi / beyond vs. within — the transcendence/immanence debate.
  • rang na roop / no color or shape — the formless One that fits no description.
  • sant janaa kai... jihvaa / on the tongues of the Saints — where true news is found.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Both-beyond-and-within resolves the debate the same way as Devgandhaari Shabad 42 (unfathomable AND in each heart) and Raag Devgandhaari Shabad 7. "The One on the tongues of the Saints" links to Sat Sangat as the place of true knowing (cf. Shabad 12's answer, Shabad 25).

For Raag Jaitsree

Dramatizes a real theological question — is God transcendent or immanent? — and answers "both," while relocating the finding of the answer to the good company. A jewel of a shabad: honest inquiry resolved in the Sangat.
