After the Biggest Vision, the Simplest Thing: Let's Sing

ਸਖੀ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾਹਾ ॥
sakhee milhu mil gun gaavaahaa.
O my companions, let us meet and join together, and sing His Glorious Praises.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਹਾ ॥
gurmukh naam japahu har laahaa.
As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, and earn the profit of the Lord's Name.
har har bhagat darirh-ee man bhaa-ee har har naam omaahaa raam. ||3||
Devotional worship of the Lord, Har, Har, has been implanted within me; it is pleasing to my mind. The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, brings a sincere love. ||3||

In plain words

O my companions, let us meet and sing the One's wonder together.

As one who faces the teacher, say the Name and gather its profit.

Devotion to the One has been planted in me; it pleases my mind. The Name brings a sincere love.

Right after the biggest vision — the One is everything — comes the simplest thing: 'let's sing together.' The vast truth is met not in lofty abstraction but in the gladness of friends side by side.
The deeper layer

After the soaring aapay lines — the One as everything — Guru Ram Das comes right back down to the warm, communal, ordinary: "let us meet and sing together." This is characteristic and important. The loftiest non-dual vision does not float off into abstraction; it lands in the simple gladness of friends singing side by side. The vast One that churns the ocean is met in the small circle of companions with the Name on their lips. And devotion "pleases my mind" — it is not a heavy duty but a delight. The infinite and the intimate, once more, held together in a single breath.

A Question to Sit With

Why might the biggest truths be best lived out in small, ordinary, shared moments?
