Let me hear the hymns of the One's praise with my own ears;
be kind, and let me meet the true teacher.
I sing the One's wonder, I speak the Word; singing the praise, a sincere longing for the One wells up.
This part says love for the One grows by simply hearing good words and singing them.
It starts with the ears. Har gun banee sarvan sunaahaa — let me hear with my ears the songs of the One's praise. For Guru Ram Das, devotion is simple and real. It comes in through the ears, when you hear the hymns. It lives on the tongue, when you sing and speak the Word. And it rises in the heart as longing.
Nothing secret or hard to reach. Just hearing, singing, and the love that grows from them. Gun gaavah gun bolah banee — I sing the praise, I speak the Word. Then the longing, omaahaa, wells up on its own.
Think of a song you heard so often that you started humming it without trying. Soon you loved it. That is the whole practice at its most humble. Open your ears to what is good. Let it onto your lips. Then watch the longing rise.
How much does what you regularly listen to shape what you come to love? What are you filling your ears with?
