Meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Nanak has found total peace. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever I wish for, that I receive.

Holding the Name in mind, Nanak has found complete peace.

'Whatever I wish, I receive' — because when the Name lives in you, your wishes heal into ones that can actually be met. The restless wanting quiets into peace, and the homeless soul comes home.
The deeper layer

A brief Shalok of fulfillment — "whatever I wish for, I receive" — the same line as Shabad 14, and read the same way: not that devotion grants every whim, but that when the Name lives in the mind, the wishes themselves are healed into ones that can be met, and "total peace" is found. The restless wanting that drove the confession of the earlier verses ("my demerits are uncountable... I keep slipping") has quieted into a mind whose one wish — for the One — is fulfilled. The homeless soul that asked for a home has, by the Name, come home to peace.

A Question to Sit With

How might your wishes change if the deepest one — for what's real and good — were already answered? Would the rest feel less desperate?
