Raag Kalyaan
Commentary

Raag Kalyaan, Chaupade, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Real wisdom is a music you find by speaking and listening together.

The Arc

A three-verse shabad on the music of good company. The One's glory is a sound-current, a melody of bliss, the wisdom the old songs reach for; sages speak and listen in the circle of saints. Wisdom, stillness, and giving gather; the mind savors the Name and wrongs crumble; and all the practices, woven through and through, merge the soul's light into the great Light.

Key Vocabulary

naad Dhun anand — the sound-current, the melody of bliss. rasik rasan naam — the mind savoring the Name like a taste. ot pot — warp and weft; woven through and through. mil jot — light merged into Light.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Suniai (deep listening) and shared speech make the music real. Remembrance is flavor, not rote—the sweet crowding out the sour. dukh na dandlee is softened from pain-and-punishment to suffering simply unable to reach the woven-in soul.

For Raag Kalyaan

The raag's evening gentleness becomes a shared music: wisdom found in company, the heart tasting sweetness, the self woven into a greater Light. Warm and communal.

Translation Notes

dandlee (pain and punishment) softened to suffering that cannot reach, dropping the punitive note per wellbeing guidance.
