Sikhism·Raag Nat Naaraayan·Shabad 18
Verse 2 of 4

Even Empty-Handed, You're Met by a Free Giver

ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਤੁਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਦਾਤੇ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੧॥
mohi nirgun tum pooran daatay deenaa naath da-i-aal. ||1||
I am unworthy; You are the Perfect Giver. You are the Merciful Master of the meek. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I feel small and empty-handed — and You are the one who gives so freely and kindly.

Even coming with empty hands, you're met by a giver who gives freely and kindly.
The deeper layer

"I am unworthy; You are the Perfect Giver. You are the Merciful Master of the meek." The self-lowering is rendered as honest empty-handedness — I have little, and You give freely. The contrast is tender: my smallness, met by boundless generosity. For a child: even coming with empty hands, you're met by a giver who gives freely and kindly.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to be given something freely, without having to earn it?
