Raag Raamkalee, Chaupada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

The one who kneels lowest is the one the ground lifts highest.

Two movements meet here: humility that lifts, and nearness that makes cruelty impossible. Because the One is haajar — present in every person — humility toward others and refusal to harm them are the same gesture. The shabad also guards against a subtle pride: jhoothaa kahhu na ko-ee, do not go about calling others false.

To the yogi's raag of withdrawal, Guru Arjan offers not the cave but the low seat among people — service beneath all feet, and the presence of the One recognized in everyone.

Translation Notes
