Verse 9 of 9

Two Things Worth Asking For

naam daan naanak vadi-aa-ee tayri-aa sant janaa raynaaree. ||8||3||8||22||
Please bless Nanak with the glorious greatness of the gift of the Naam, and the dust of the feet of Your Saints. ||8||3||8||22||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak prays: bless me with this greatness, the gift of the Naam,

and the dust from the feet of Your saints.

Ask for two things: the gift of the Naam and a humble heart.
The deeper layer

Ask small: naam daan (the gift of the Naam) and sant janaa raynaaree (the dust of the feet of the saints). Raynaaree, the dust of the path, is the image of deep humility. After all the praise, what is asked for is open, empty hands.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just two things that matter most, what would they be?
