Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
My Friend, my Friend — the One I love is standing right beside me.
My Beloved, the One I love — with my own eyes I have seen my Beloved.
With my eyes I have seen the Beloved resting in every single heart. My Beloved is sweeter than the sweetest nectar.
The One is with everyone, yet cannot be found; the foolish mind does not know the taste.
Dizzy on the world's glitter, a person chatters about little things, and lost in illusion, cannot meet the One.
Nanak says: without the Guru, no one understands that the One, the Friend, is standing near everyone.
A Chhant is a song of the soul meeting its Beloved. Saajanrhaa is "dear little friend," an intimate diminutive. At the heart of the hymn is a paradox: the One is naal hovandaa leh na sakandaa — "right here, yet not grasped." Maa-i-aa mad is the intoxication of Maya, the pull of appearances, which makes the mind dizzy and its talk small. The Guru clears the eyes to see what was always present.
When has something you were searching for turned out to be close all along?
