Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When I forget You, every pain and every trouble comes.
Even a hundred thousand efforts cannot wash them away.
Whoever forgets the Naam is called poor.
Whoever forgets the Naam wanders from life to life.
Whoever does not keep the Master in mind is struck by death's rod.
Whoever does not keep the Master in mind is counted as sick.
Whoever does not keep the Master in mind is puffed up with pride.
Whoever forgets the Naam lives unhappy in this world.
Forgetting the One has a cost, and it is named plainly: pain, poverty of spirit, wandering, sickness and pride. No pile of efforts can fill the place the Naam leaves empty. Death's rod (jam dand) is a picture of how hard life becomes without the One. Pride (ahankaar) is named a sickness, something to heal.
What helps you remember something important when you have let it slip your mind?
