Cut up desire, sexuality, anger, pride and envy, and let them be the fermenting bark. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Make your body the vat, and mix in the yeast. Let the Guru's Shabad be the sweet molasses.
Chop up your wanting, your strong desires, your anger, pride and envy, and let them be the bark that makes it all ferment.
Even your worst habits, faced honestly, can become fuel for becoming better.
The deeper layer
The 'wine' brewed here is spiritual joy, not any real drink. The body is the vat, the Guru's Shabad is the molasses, and the five faults — desire, anger, pride, envy — become the fermenting bark. Nothing is wasted: even faults, faced honestly, can fuel the change into something clear and good.
A Question to Sit With
Can you think of a fault of yours that, looked at squarely, could teach you something?
