No Place Is Cursed

ਤੋਰੇ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਮਗਹਰ ਬਸਿਓ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਨ ਕੀ ਤਪਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
toray bharosay maghar basi-o mayray tan kee tapat bujhaa-ee.
Relying upon You, I can live even in the cursed place of Magahar; You have put out the fire of my body.
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਮਗਹਰ ਪਾਇਓ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਾਸੀ ਬਸੇ ਆਈ ॥੨॥
pahilay darsan maghar paa-i-o fun kaasee basay aa-ee. ||2||
First, I obtained the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan in Magahar; then, I came to dwell at Benares. ||2||

In plain words

Trusting You, I went to live in Magahar, the town people call cursed, and You cooled the burning in my body.

First I saw You in Magahar, and then I came to live in Benares.

No place is magic and no place is cursed — what matters is what you carry inside.
The deeper layer

In Kabir's time many believed that to die in the holy city of Kaashi (Benares) earned liberation, while to die in Magahar brought disaster. Kabir rejected the superstition — he even chose Magahar on purpose — because a heart anchored in the One is safe anywhere. The 'fire' cooled (tapat bujhaa-ee) is inner restlessness, not a fever of the body.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard someone call a place lucky or unlucky? What do you think makes the difference?
