In plain words

O yogi, practice this kind of yoga.

Turned toward the Guru, enjoy remembering the One, steady effort and self-control.

Done with love, self-discipline becomes a joy.
The deeper layer

Practice yoga of this kind: turned toward the Guru, remembering, patient effort and self-control become a joy.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Aisaa jog kamaavahu jogee means "practice such yoga, O yogi." Jog (yoga) here means a way of joining with the One.

Jap tap sanjam gurmukh bhogee means "turned toward the Guru, you enjoy remembering, patient effort and self-control." A gurmukh is someone whose face is turned toward the Guru's teaching. Bhogee means one who enjoys.

That word is the surprise. These practices are not a grim chore. They are a joy. Think of practicing piano. At first it can feel like work. But when you love the music, practice becomes something you look forward to.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a habit that is hard at first but feels good once you make it your own?
