Verse 2 of 5

Threaded Through by the Name

ਮਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਬੇਧੀਅਲੇ ॥
man raam naamaa bayDhee-alay.
My mind has been pierced by the Name of the Lord,
ਜੈਸੇ ਕਨਿਕ ਕਲਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਮਾਂਡੀਅਲੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaisay kanik kalaa chit maaNdee-alay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
like the goldsmith, whose attention is held by his work. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind is threaded through with the Naam of the One,

the way a goldsmith's attention is held by his work.

Loving attention rests on what you love the way a craftsman's eyes rest on his work.
The deeper layer

Bedheealay means pierced or threaded through, the mind sewn to the Name the way cloth is threaded by a needle. The goldsmith bent over his tiny work is the image of single-pointed, loving attention (simran) held while the hands are busy.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line and heart of the shabad.

A Question to Sit With

When are you so absorbed in something that you forget everything else?
