Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O One, no one belongs to anyone else.

We are like birds perched together on a tree.

No one owns anyone; we simply share the same tree for a while.
The deeper layer

Raam ko-ay na kis hee kayraa — no one belongs to anyone. The image tarvar pankh basayraa, birds perched on a tree, is a classic picture of impermanence and of shared, unowned belonging: we gather on one tree for a while and then each of us flies on.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the birds sharing your tree right now?
