Sexual desire, anger, Maya, intoxication and jealousy - these five have combined to plunder the world. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O Divine One, the knot of doubt will not come loose.

Wanting, anger, the pull of Maya (the world's glitter), getting carried away, and jealousy: these five have joined together and are robbing the whole world.

Doubt holds tight while five inner thieves rob the world.
The deeper layer

Doubt ties a knot that pulling cannot loosen, and five inner thieves work together to rob the world.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line at the centre of the shabad. Sansai is doubt, the knot that will not loosen by force. The panch, the five, are kaam (wanting), krodh (anger), maa-i-aa (the pull of the world's glitter), mad (getting carried away) and matsar (jealousy). Like thieves who work as a team, they slip in together and carry off what matters.

A Question to Sit With

Which of these five tugs at you the most, and when?
