Wherever I look, there I see the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Your light is spread across everything, in every direction.

Wherever I turn my eyes, there You are. I keep meeting You in the whole wide world.

The same Light shines through everything you look at.
The deeper layer

The One's Light shines through everything, wherever you look.

Sarab jot tayree pasar rahee — Your Light is spread through all. Guru Nanak says it very plainly: the One is right here, shining through every single thing. Think of the sun on a clear morning. It lights up every leaf, every window, every face at once.

Jah jah daykhaa tah narharee — wherever I look, there is the One. Narharee is one of the names for the One. This line sets up the whole shabad. It is a search for Someone who is already everywhere.

A Question to Sit With
