Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 30
Verse 5 of 6

The Body Is the Temple

ਚਹੁ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੈ ਮਟੁ ਹੈ ਕੀਆ ॥
chahu meh aikai mat hai kee-aa.
Throughout the four ages, the One Lord made the body His temple.
ਤਹ ਬਿਖੜੇ ਥਾਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਖਿੜਕੀਆ ॥
tah bikh-rhay thaan anik khirhkee-aa.
It is a treacherous place, with several windows.
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਆਇਆ ॥
khojat khojat du-aaray aa-i-aa.
Searching and searching, one comes to the Lord's door.
ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਗੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
taa naanak jogee mahal ghar paa-i-aa. ||4||
Then, O Nanak, the Yogi attains a home in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||4||

In plain words

In all four ages, the One has made the body a temple.

It is a hard, tricky place, with many windows to get lost in.

Searching and searching, the seeker comes to the One's door.

Nanak says: then the yogi finds a home in the One's own house.

Your body is a temple; keep searching, and you find the home inside.
The deeper layer

The One lives inside us, and the long search ends at home.

Chahu meh aikai mat hai kee-aa means that in every age, the One made the body a temple. The verse calls it a tricky place with many windows. The windows are our senses, and they make it easy to get lost looking outside.

Khojat khojat du-aaray aa-i-aa means "searching and searching, I came to the door." And then mahal ghar paa-i-aa, the home was found. The yogi finds a home in the One's own house.

The temple we looked for everywhere turns out to be inside us. It is like a game of hide-and-seek where the one you were looking for was right behind you the whole time.

A Question to Sit With

What might change if you treated your own body and heart as a kind of temple?
