A Restless Seat Brings No Peace

ਚਲ ਚਿਤ ਜੋਗੀ ਆਸਣੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
chal chit jogee aasan tayraa.
Your consciousness is restless, Yogi, as you sit in your Yogic postures.
ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਉਦਾਸੇਰਾ ॥
sinyee vaajai nit udaasayraa.
You blow your horn, but still feel sad.
ਗੁਰ ਗੋਰਖ ਕੀ ਤੈ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur gorakh kee tai boojh na paa-ee.
You do not understand Gorakh, your guru.
ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
fir fir jogee aavai jaa-ee. ||3||
Again and again, Yogi, you come and go. ||3||

In plain words

Your mind is restless, yogi, while you sit in your yoga pose.

You blow your horn every day, and still you feel sad.

You have not understood Gorakh, your own guru.

Again and again, yogi, you come and go.

You can hold the perfect pose and still be restless inside.
The deeper layer

A still body with a restless mind keeps you going around in circles.

Chal chit jogee aasan tayraa — the seat is steady but the mind is not. Singee, the yogi's horn, sounds, and sadness stays. Gur gorakh kee tai boojh na paa-ee — even Gorakh, the yogis' revered guru, is not understood when forms are kept without insight. Outer discipline without inner understanding only circles: fir fir aavai jaa-ee, coming and going again and again.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you can do "perfectly" on the outside while feeling unsettled inside?
