The True Scholar

so pandit gur sabad kamaa-ay.
He alone is a Pandit, who lives the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
tarai gun kee os utree maa-ay.
Maya, of the three qualities, leaves him.
chatur bayd pooran har naa-ay.
The four Vedas are completely contained within the Lord's Name.
naanak tis kee sarnee paa-ay. ||4||6||17||
Nanak seeks His Sanctuary. ||4||6||17||

In plain words

That one alone is a Pandit who lives the Guru's Shabad.

Maya, the world's pull with its three moods, lets go of that person.

The four Vedas are all complete in the One's Name.

Nanak says: I seek the One's shelter.

The true scholar is the one who lives what they learn.
The deeper layer

The true scholar is the one who lives the Guru's Shabad, and all learning is complete in the Name.

So pandit gur sabad kamaa-ay — the true scholar earns/lives the Shabad. Trai gun (Maya's three strands — activity, inertia, and passion) fall away; the four Vedas are said to be fulfilled in the Name, folding all learning back into one living reality (Naam).

A Question to Sit With

What would it look like to live one thing you believe, instead of only knowing it?
