Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let go of envying others, foolish one!

You are only here for one night, foolish one!

Drunk on getting and having, you must soon get up and go.

You are wrapped up inside a dream.

Life is one short night; don't spend it envying.
The deeper layer

Drop your envy of others: chhaad vidaanee taat. Life as raat, one night, and supnaa, a dream, is not despair but perspective. Moorhay, foolish one, is a shake on the shoulder to wake up, not contempt.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad.

A Question to Sit With

When you catch yourself envying someone, what could you do instead?
