Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 47
Verse 5 of 5

The One Who Lets Go Is Free

jo maagai so bhookhaa rahai.
Whoever begs from her remains hungry.
is sang raachai so kachhoo na lahai.
Whoever is infatuated with her obtains nothing.
iseh ti-aag satsangat karai.
But one who renounces her, and joins the Society of the Saints,
vadbhaagee naanak oh tarai. ||4||18||29||
by great good fortune, O Nanak, is saved. ||4||18||29||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever begs from Maya stays hungry.

Whoever is wrapped up in it gets nothing.

But whoever lets it go and joins the Sangat —

Nanak says: by great good fortune, that one is carried across.

The hungriest hearts are the ones that keep grabbing.
The deeper layer

Jo maagai so bhookhaa rahai — begging from Maya only makes the hunger deeper. The way out is ti-aag, letting go, together with the satsangat: the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of something made you feel freer?
