Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 49
Verse 3 of 5

Awake At Last

ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਪੂਰਬਲਾ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
aa-ay bani-o poorbalaa bhaag.
My pre-ordained destiny has been activated;
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਸੋਇਆ ਜਾਗੁ ॥
janam janam kaa so-i-aa jaag.
I have awakened from the sleep of countless incarnations.
ਗਈ ਗਿਲਾਨਿ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
ga-ee gilaan saaDh kai sang.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, my aversion is gone.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਤੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੨॥
man tan raato har kai rang. ||2||
My mind and body are imbued with love for the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A good fortune written long ago has come alive in me.

I have woken from the sleep of countless lifetimes.

In the Sangat, the coldness I carried is gone.

My mind and body are dyed in the love of the One.

The Sangat can melt a coldness you didn't know you were carrying.
The deeper layer

Poorbalaa bhaag, a fortune from long ago, aa-ay bani-o, comes alive now. Ga-ee gilaan: the aversion, the inner coldness, melts saadh kai sang, in the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One. To be raato har kai rang is to be dyed right through in one color: love.

A Question to Sit With

Has spending time with the right people ever thawed something in you?
