Joy Welling Up

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਉ ॥

Listening, listening to His Praises, joy has welled up within my mind.

Twenty-four hours a day, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਗਾਵਤ ਗਾਵਤ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
gaavat gaavat param gat paa-ee.
Singing, singing His Praises, I have obtained the supreme status.

By Guru's Grace, Nanak is lovingly focused on the Lord. ||4||20||31||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listening and listening to the praises of the One, joy welled up in my mind.

All through the day and night, I sing the One's praises.

Singing and singing, I have reached the highest state.

Nanak says: by the Guru's grace, my heart is lovingly fixed on the One.

Deep listening grows into joy that wants to sing.
The deeper layer

Sun sun upji-o man meh chaa-o — listening, Suniai, makes joy grow. Gaavat gaavat param gat — singing leads to the highest state. And even the loving focus, liv, comes gur parsaad, by the Guru's grace, given rather than forced.

A Question to Sit With

What do you love listening to so much it makes you want to join in?
