The True Hermit

ਸੋ ਅਉਧੂਤੁ ਐਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
so a-uDhoot aisee mat paavai.
He alone is a hermit, who attains such understanding.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis sunn samaaDh samaavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Day and night, he remains absorbed in deepest Samaadhi. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Only someone who gains this understanding is a hermit.

Day and night, their mind rests in a deep, still, peaceful quiet, at home in the One.

A hermit is measured by inner stillness, not outer wandering.
The deeper layer

A hermit is known by what happens inside.

This is the rahaa-o line. Rahaa-o means "pause." It is the center of the whole shabad, the line everything else circles around.

An a-uDhoot was a wandering hermit who left home and owned nothing. People knew one by the robes and the long travels. Guru Nanak gives a new test. So a-uDhoot aisee mat paavai — the hermit is the one who gains this understanding.

Ahinis sunn samaaDh samaavai — day and night, such a person rests in deep stillness. Sunn samaaDh was a yogi's word for a deep trance. Here it means something you can carry all day long. It is the steady peace of a heart settled in the One.

Think of a lake. Wind may ripple the top, but far down the water stays calm. A hermit lives from that calm, deep place.

A Question to Sit With

Can you find a quiet, still place inside yourself even in a noisy room?
