In plain words

Nanak prays: let me share a deep secret of the One.

The Guru and the student are joined together.

The teaching is both food and medicine. Whoever takes it in gains the wisdom of the six great schools of thought.

When the Guru and a ready student meet, understanding comes alive.
The deeper layer

When the Guru and a student meet, the teaching comes alive.

Gur chaylay kee sanDh milaa-ay — the teacher and the student are joined. Gur is the Guru, the teacher. Chaylaa is the student. This meeting is the heart of the whole path.

Then Guru Nanak gives a new picture of deekhi-aa. Deekhi-aa is the start of being taught, a welcome onto the path. Here it becomes daaroo bhojan — medicine and food. Food makes you strong. Medicine makes you well. The teaching does both.

Think of a coach who finally explains a move in just the right way. Suddenly your feet know what to do. The lesson feeds you and fixes what was stuck.

Last, the verse names the chhi-a darsan, the six great schools of Indian thought. Each one was a way of seeking the truth. The verse honors them all. They were all reaching toward the one wisdom this teaching gives directly.
