Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You keep longing for Maya,
and never sing the One's praises with your mind or your mouth.
The One is fearless and formless, the Great Giver.
Yet, foolish one, you do not love that One.
The One is fearless, formless and the Great Giver, and still a heart busy chasing Maya forgets to love that One.
The verse notices how often we keep aching for maa-i-aa, the pull of getting and having, and forget to praise. Then it names the One: nirbha-o nirankaar daataar. That means fearless, without any shape, and the Giver of everything. Nirbha-o, fearless, echoes the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib.
The verse ends with a sharp word, gavaar, which means "fool." It is a wake-up call. Think of a gift with your name on it, sitting unopened.
What does it mean to you that the One is described as having no fear?
