ਗਨਿ ਮਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
gan min daykhhu sagal beechaar.
Calculating, measuring, and thinking in every way,
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਤਾਰਿ ॥
naam binaa ko sakai na taar.
see that without the Naam, no one can be carried across.
ਸਗਲ ਉਪਾਵ ਨ ਚਾਲਹਿ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
sagal upaav na chaaleh sang.
Of all your efforts, none will go along with you.
ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੨॥
bhavjal taree-ai parabh kai rang. ||2||
You can cross over the terrifying world-ocean only through the love of God. ||2||

and see: without the Name, no one can carry you across.
Of all your efforts, none will go along with you.
Only through the love of God do you cross the great, rough ocean of the world.
Cleverness is useful, but it is love that carries you across.
Bhavjal is the world pictured as a great ocean. Effort has its place, yet sagal upaav, all your clever plans, do not travel with you. Prabh kai rang, the love of the One, carries you home.
