The Age Lives Nowhere but in Us

ਕਿਤੈ ਦੇਸਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਤੀਰਥ ਪਾਸਿ ਨ ਬੈਠਾ ॥
kitai days na aa-i-aa sunee-ai tirath paas na baithaa.
Kali Yuga has not been heard to have come to any country, or to be sitting at any sacred shrine.
ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਤਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਹਲ ਉਸਾਰਿ ਨ ਬੈਠਾ ॥੨॥
daataa daan karay tah naahee mahal usaar na baithaa. ||2||
It is not where the generous person gives to charities, nor seated in the mansion he has built. ||2||

In plain words

You keep hearing about this confused age. You will not find it hiding in some faraway country.

It does not sit at any holy river or shrine. It is not in the rich man's charity or his big new house.

*The confusion of the times is not out there in a place — it lives in how we treat each other.*
The deeper layer

The confused age is not a place far away; it lives in the hearts of people.

Guru Nanak takes apart the idea that kal, the confused age, is a thing out there. It has not "come to any country." It is not sitting at a tirath, a holy river or place of pilgrimage. It is not in the rich man's gift or in his mahal, his mansion.

So where is it? It is a condition of the heart. It is not a spot on the map. The confusion lives in how we treat each other.

Think of a bad mood in a family. You won't find it hiding under a bed or in the garage. It lives in the way people speak and act. This moves the whole problem from the world to ourselves. That is good news, because what is in us is something we can change.

A Question to Sit With

It is easy to say “the world is a mess.” What is one small way you can make your own corner kinder?
