Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Don't tell lies, Pandit; speak the Truth.

When ego is wiped away through the Word, you find your home.

*Speak the truth, and you find your way home inside.*
The deeper layer

Tell the truth, and let the Word carry ego away; then you find your home.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. It speaks to a paaday, a pandit or learned scholar. Jhooth na bol paaday sach kahee-ai means "do not tell lies, pandit, speak the truth."

Ha-umai jaa-ay sabad ghar lahee-ai means "when the ego goes, through the Word, you find your home." Ha-umai is ego, the "me first" voice inside. Sabad is the Guru's Word.

Think of coming home after a long day and dropping your heavy backpack at the door. You cannot relax while carrying it. Lies and pride are both heavy bags. Put them down, and you arrive at the calm home inside you.

A Question to Sit With

Why is it that telling the truth — even small truths — makes you feel more like yourself?
