Grace Wells Up as Love

Blessed with Your Grace, I obtain the True Name.
ਤੁਮ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਰਹਉ ਸੁਭਾਉ ॥

I remain in Your Sanctuary, in loving devotion.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਉ ॥

Love for Your devotional worship has welled up within me.

As Gurmukh, I chant and meditate on the Lord's Name. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By Your grace, I receive the True Name.

I stay in Your shelter, with love, with an easy heart.

From You, love and devotion have welled up inside me.

Following the Guru, I chant and keep the Naam of the One in my thoughts.

Love for the One is a gift that rises up, not a task you complete.
The deeper layer

Everything good comes as a gift, even the love we feel for the One.

Karam milai paavai sach naa-o — by grace, a person receives the True Name. Karam here means grace, a kindness freely given. You cannot earn it, the way you cannot earn a hug from someone who loves you. It is simply given.

Tum saranaagat raha-o subhaa-o — I stay in Your shelter, naturally. Subhaa-o means with ease, the way you relax at home without trying.

Then comes the most surprising line. Tum tay upji-o bhagtee bhaa-o — love and devotion rose up from You. Even our love for the One is not something we build by ourselves. It wells up from the One, like water from a spring. That is the answer to all the questions earlier in the shabad: grace, received with an open heart.

A Question to Sit With

When has a good feeling risen in you on its own, unforced?
