Raamkalee, Third Mehl:
ham kuchal kucheel at abhimaanee mil sabday mail utaaree. ||1||
I am filthy and polluted, proud and egotistical; receiving the Word of the Shabad, my filth is taken away. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I am stained and dirty, full of pride and ego.
Meeting the Guru's Word, the dirt is washed off me, the way clean water lifts the dirt from your hands.
Meeting the Guru's Word washes off the dirt of pride.
Pride and ego stain a person like dirt, and the Guru's Word washes that dirt away. Ham kuchal kucheel at abhimaanee — I am filthy, polluted, very proud. Mil sabday mail utaaree — meeting the Word, the filth is taken off.
The verse is honest without dwelling on shame. The confession and the washing come in the same breath.
