In plain words

Some people spend their days chasing pleasure and good looks.

Some spend them wrapped up in family, parents and children.

Some spend them building power, property and business.

And the saints spend their days leaning on the Name of the One.

How you spend your days is how you spend your life.
The deeper layer

People spend their days on very different things: pleasure, family, power, work.

The verse starts a list that runs through the whole song. Each line begins kaahoo bihaavai — "some spend their lives..." It is like walking down a street and looking in every window.

Some spend it on rang ras roop — fun, pleasure, and good looks. Some spend it on maa-ay baap poot — mother, father, and children. Some spend it on raaj milakh vaapaaraa — power, land, and business.

None of these is called bad. Family is a gift. Work is honest. The verse is just looking at what fills a life.

Then comes the last line of each verse, and it always turns. Sant bihaavai har naam aDhaaraa — the sant, the saint or holy person, spends life leaning on the Name. ADhaar means support, like the frame that holds up a house.

A Question to Sit With

What do you spend most of your days on right now?
