Verse 3 of 10

The Chance That Matters Is the One You're In Now

ਪਛੋਤਾਵਾ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਬ ਚੂਕੈਗੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥
pachhotaavaa naa milai jab chookaigee saaree.
Nothing comes from repentance, when the game is already finished.
ਤਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਰਾਵੀਐ ਜਬ ਆਵੈਗੀ ਵਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
taa fir pi-aaraa raavee-ai jab aavaigee vaaree. ||3||
She shall have the opportunity to enjoy her Beloved, only when her turn comes again. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nothing comes of regret once the game is already over.

Only when her turn comes round again will she have another chance to delight in her Beloved.

Regret can't replay a missed turn — which is exactly why the chance that matters is the one you're in now.
The deeper layer

This one is honest: once the game is over, regret can't replay it.

Pachhotaavaa naa milai — regret brings nothing back. Think of a school play. After the curtain falls, wishing you had tried harder doesn't change the show.

This is not said to be harsh. It is urgency wrapped in kindness. It is said so we don't waste the turn we are in. The verse adds that she gets another chance only when her turn comes around again.

The chance is now. Regret is what's left when now is gone.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a 'turn' you're in right now that you don't want to look back on with regret?
