Raag Todee
Commentary

Raag Todee, Shabad 17, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

"I have only the One Lord, my God; I do not recognize any other."

The Arc

Joyful single-heartedness. Having just the One is enough; the Guru plants the Name firm within (v.0); remembrance folds in all practices — meditation, austerity, fasting — and yields "total joy" (v.1); praise relocates good-conduct/occupation/class, and listening brings ecstasy (v.2); those who have found the Master find "everything comes to their homes" (v.3).

Key Vocabulary

  • dridh / implanted firm — the Name set steady by the Guru, not self-manufactured.
  • tap / varat — austerity / fasting, all fulfilled inwardly in remembrance.
  • karam / kirat / jaat — conduct / occupation / class, relocated into the Name.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Folding all practices into remembrance recurs (B00C1560; Aasaa's inward-turn shabads). Relocating jaat into the Name is the equality thread shared with B00C1537 and the Bhagat section (B00C1562–63). "Everything comes to their homes" = the peace of sufficiency (cf. B00C1547, Goojaree's provision teaching).

For Raag Todee

The bright, grateful counterpart to the raag's diagnostic shabads: focus, not narrowness — the peace of a heart that has stopped dividing itself.
