Verse 3 of 3

Admitting Effort Can't Lift the Fog Isn't Defeat

ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨਿ ਛੁਟੀ ਨ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਈ ॥
magan rahi-o maa-i-aa mai nis din chhutee na man kee kaa-ee.
I remain intoxicated by Maya, night and day, and the filth of my mind will not depart.
kahi naanak ab naahi anat gat bin har kee sarnaa-ee. ||2||1||31||
Says Nanak, now, without the Lord's Sanctuary, I cannot find salvation in any other way. ||2||1||31||

In plain words

Day and night I stay a little dazzled by the glitter, and the fog inside me won't seem to lift.

So, Nanak says, without taking shelter in the One, I honestly don't see any other way through.

Admitting self-effort alone can't lift the fog isn't defeat — it's the clear-eyed turn toward real help.
The deeper layer

The shabad ends not with a triumphant fix but with honest need — which is exactly its power. "The filth of my mind will not depart" admits that self-effort alone hasn't cleared the fog. And the conclusion is sharan, shelter: "without the Lord's Sanctuary, I cannot find salvation in any other way." Coming from Guru Tegh Bahadur — who would later give his life for others' freedom of conscience — this humility is not weakness but clarity: the honest recognition that we cannot save ourselves by cleverness, and the turning, in trust, toward the One who can. Todee's whole message in miniature: honest diagnosis, open door.

A Question to Sit With

When have you tried to fix something all by yourself and couldn't? What changed when you finally asked for help?
