Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 18 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 18 — the One lives in a heart that lets go

ਜਿਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਤਜੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਭਇਓ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
jihi maa-i-aa mamtaa tajee sabh tay bha-i-o udaas.
One who renounces Maya and possessiveness and is detached from everything
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧੮॥
kaho naanak sun ray manaa tih ghat barahm nivaas. ||18||
- says Nanak, listen, mind: God abides in his heart. ||18||

In plain words

Whoever has given up Maya, the pull of money and things, and the feeling of "mine," and stays unattached to it all —

Nanak says: listen, O my mind, the One lives in that person's heart.

Letting go makes space in the heart for the One.
The deeper layer

Let go of clutching, and the heart makes room for the One.

jihi maa-i-aa mamtaa tajee — whoever lets go of Maya, money and things, and mamtaa, the feeling of "mine." sabh tay bha-i-o udaas — they stay unattached to everything. Here udaas means free of clinging, not sad. tih ghat barahm nivaas — the One lives in that heart.

Think of a cluttered bedroom. Once you clear the floor, you find the rug was beautiful the whole time. Letting go makes room to notice the One.

A Question to Sit With

When you clear clutter out of a room, it feels roomier. What clutter could you clear from your heart?
