Verse 33 of 57
Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 33 — you shall dwell in the Fearless One
Mortals wander lost and confused through countless lifetimes; their fear of death is never removed.
kaho naanak har bhaj manaa nirbhai paavahi baas. ||33||
Says Nanak, vibrate and meditate on the Lord, and you shall dwell in the Fearless Lord. ||33||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Lifetime after lifetime, people wander lost, and their fear of death never goes away.
Nanak says: O my mind, remember the One, and you will live in the Fearless One.
Remember the Fearless One, and fear has nowhere left to live in you.
Remembering the One brings a person home to fearlessness.
Janam janam bharmat firi-o: wandering, lost, birth after birth. Miti-o na jam ko taraas: the fear of death is never erased.
Nirbhai paavahi baas: you will find your home in the Fearless One. Fearless is also how the Mool Mantar, the opening of the Guru Granth Sahib, describes the One. Living there, fear has no place to stay.
A Question to Sit With
Is there a fear you carry quietly? What would it feel like to set it down in a safe place?
