In plain words

You Yourself are the ocean and the boat. You Yourself are this shore, and the one beyond.

O All-knowing Lord, You are the True Way. The Shabad is the Navigator to ferry us across.

One who does not fear God shall live in fear. Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness.

The divine is ocean, boat, both shores, and the way — the crossing happens entirely within the One.
The deeper layer

The divine as ocean, boat, both shores, and the way across: the traversal is entirely within the divine. You are not crossing from outside the divine to inside it; the whole crossing happens within the One.

'One who does not fear God shall live in fear' — Har bhai nahin tis bhai mahi verthaa — the specific paradox: the fear of God is the antidote to all other fears. The person who has no reverence-awe for the divine is driven by every other kind of fear. Guru's presence as the only alternative to the darkness.

A Question to Sit With

What fears drive you most? And is there anything that, when you feel connected to it, makes those fears smaller or less urgent?
