In plain words

The fish did not notice the net in the deep and salty sea.

It was so clever and beautiful — but why was it so confident?

By its actions it was caught, and now death cannot be turned away from its head.

The clever, beautiful fish did not see the net — cleverness does not protect against what you are not looking at.
The deeper layer

The clever, beautiful fish that did not notice the net: mach-lee naa jaanai — the fish did not know. Not because it was stupid — it was seeaanee sohani (clever and beautiful). Cleverness and beauty do not protect against unseen nets. The net was always there; the fish's confidence (ki bharaase) was misplaced because it was based on not-seeing, not on actual safety.

This is one of Guru Nanak's sharpest images: the confident person is not safe because they are confident. Confidence without awareness is not protection — it is the condition of the caught.

A Question to Sit With

What are you most confident about in your life? And when did you last actually examine whether that confidence is based on reality or assumption?
