In plain words

If the mind is polluted, then the body is polluted, and the tongue is polluted as well.

With false mouths, people speak falsehood. How can they be made pure?

Without the Holy Water of the Shabad, they are not cleansed. From the True One alone comes Truth.

The polluted mind produces polluted body and tongue — purification must begin where the pollution begins: within.
The deeper layer

This one says that being clean starts on the inside.

Man joothai tan jooth hai: "if the mind is dirty, the body is dirty too," and so is the tongue. The dirt starts inside and spreads outward. A mind full of lies makes a mouth that speaks lies.

So outside washing cannot fix it. Special baths, special foods and set prayers can be good things. But on their own they cannot reach the place where the problem began. It is like wiping a screen when the bug is in the app.

What does reach it? Bin abh sabad na maajee-ai: "without the holy water of the Shabad, no one is washed clean." The Shabad, the Guru's Word, is the water that truly washes. And saachay tay sach ho-ay: "from the True One alone comes truth." Being truly honest does not come only from trying hard. It grows from staying close to the One, who is Truth itself.

A Question to Sit With

What is your experience of inner and outer pollution — when your inner state is troubled, what happens to what you say and do? And what purifies the inner state most effectively for you?
