Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Without the Guru, this dirt inside is not washed away. Without the Lord, how can anyone come home?
Think deeply on the One Word, the Shabad, and let go of other hopes.
O Nanak, I am forever a sacrifice to the one who sees Him, and helps others to see Him too.
This one says the Guru is how the dirt inside gets washed out, and one Word is enough.
Bin gur mail na utrai — without the Guru, the dirt does not come off. This dirt is haumai, the me-first feeling, and the muddle it makes. It isn't about being a bad person. It's more like a foggy window. The Guru is not someone to lean on forever. The Guru is the cloth that wipes the glass clear.
Ayko sabad veechaaree-ai — think deeply on the one Word. The advice is always the same: keep it simple. One Word. One practice. One direction. The world outside is busy and noisy. That doesn't mean the answer inside has to be complicated. It can be very simple.
Think of a busy kitchen. Many pots, many timers. The cook who stays calm has one steady recipe in mind.
Guru Nanak ends by giving himself to the one who sees the One and helps others see too.
What is one thing — just one — that you could let go of that would make you feel cleaner, lighter, more yourself?
