Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The wretched fools do not know the Lord's Will. They wander around making one mistake after another.
They go about their business in stubborn-mindedness, facing their own ego. They are disgraced forever and ever.
Inner peace does not come to them. They do not embrace love for the True Lord.
Moorakh visar-ay hukam na jaanay, bhuldi-aa fireh bhav-aa-ay — the wretched fools (moorakh — the spiritually unaware) do not know the Lord's Will (hukam); they wander around in error (bhuldi-aa fireh). After Pauri 5's affirmation that everything is within hukam, Pauri 6 names the condition of those who do not know this: they wander. Visar-ay (they forget) — the forgetting of hukam produces the wandering. You cannot align with what you have forgotten exists.
Mannmukh ho-ay apnai suaa-ay, saad sad kalankee paa-ay — acting in stubborn self-will (mannmukh) for their own ends (apnai suaa-ay — for self-interest, ego-interest), they are disgraced (kalankee — dishonored, carrying the mark of shame) forever and always (saad sad). The disgrace is not inflicted from outside — it is the natural consequence of being oriented toward self-interest in a universe whose nature is the divine will. The self-interested person is living against the grain of reality, and the friction shows.
Sukh na paahai khat-harhe, saachay prit na laavai — inner peace (sukh) does not come; they do not embrace love for the True Lord (saachay prit). The summary of the manmukh's experience without hukam-awareness: no peace, no love for the True One. The two absences are related: without love for the True One, there is no peace. Without hukam-awareness, love for the True One cannot settle.
When do you find yourself most at peace — and is it when you are forcing things or when you are aligned with what is actually happening?
