Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Doubt departs and fear runs away when you focus your consciousness on the Lord's Feet.
The Gurmukh practices the Shabad, and the Lord comes to dwell within the mind.
In the mansion of the home within the self, we merge in Truth — and the Messenger of Death cannot devour us.
This line says: when your mind rests at the Lord's feet, doubt and fear run away.
Bharam ga-i-aa bha-o bhaagi-aa: doubt is gone, and fear runs off. Har charnee chit laa-ay: when you place your chit, your attention, at the Lord's charan, His feet.
Resting at someone's feet is a humble, trusting way to be. Think of a small child sitting by a parent's feet during a thunderstorm. The thunder is still loud, but the child is calm. Doubt and fear can't stay long in that humble, trusting place.
Gurmukh sabad kamaa-ee-ai: the Gurmukh, the one who follows the Guru, earns the Shabad, the Guru's Word. It is practiced and lived, the way you earn a skill by using it. Har vasai man aa-ay: then the Lord comes to live in the mind. He stays like someone who lives there, not a quick visitor.
Ghar mahal sach samaa-ee-ai: in the palace of our own inner home, we blend into Truth. Jamkaal na sakai khaa-ay: jamkaal, the messenger of death, cannot swallow us.
This does not mean the body never dies. It means the fear of death has nothing to grab. When you are part of Truth, you are part of something that does not end.
What is the posture of humility that you most need to practice right now — and what makes it hard?
