Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In the Sat Sangat — the True Congregation — the Name of the Lord wells up, when the True Guru unites us in His Love.
I offer my mind and body. I renounce selfishness and conceit. I walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.
I am forever a sacrifice to my Guru, who has attached my consciousness to the Lord.
This line says: in good company the Name grows in us, and the Guru ties our heart to God.
Satsangat meh naam har upjai: in the satsangat, the gathering of people who love God, the Lord's Name upjai, springs up. Jaa satgur milai subhaa-ay: when the True Guru joins us in His love.
The sangat is more than a crowd. It is a place where the Name rises on its own. Think of a campfire. One stick alone burns out fast. Many sticks together keep each other burning. Together, people find what is hard to find alone.
Man tan arpee: "I give my mind and my body." Aap gavaa-ee: "I let go of my selfish pride." Chalaa satgur bhaa-ay: "I walk in step with the True Guru's will."
That is a full giving. The proud "me first" voice, called ha-umai or ego, is set aside. What is left is a mind that moves in step with the Guru, like a dancer following the music.
Sad balihaaree gur apunay: "I am forever balihaaree to my Guru." Balihaaree means "I would give my all for you," a deep, loving thank-you. Je har saytee chit laa-ay: because the Guru has joined my attention to the Lord. The Guru does more than teach. The Guru builds the bond.
When have you been part of a community where something was possible that you couldn't have found alone — and what made that community what it was?
